Information about BERN Bern, the capital of Switzerland and one of the oldest cities in Europe, still gives the feel of a medieval provincial city. It became the eighth member of Swiss Federation in 1353. The city saw its best during 14th and 15th century, when it wielded power all around, enlarged its territory and gained greater political influence. With much of its medieval structures still intact and new contemporary houses built by the residents, Bern has a look of harmonious coexistence between old and new. The perfectly preserved medieval street plan, with its arcades, street fountains and doughty towers persuaded UNESCO to deem Bern a World Heritage Site, placing it in the company of such legendary sites as Florence, Petra and the Taj Mahal. For all its political status, Bern is a tiny city of barely 130,000 people and retains a small town’s easy approach to life. The attraction of the place, is its ambience.
